Before you start
This guide will help you set up an edge node so you can manage it with ZEDEDA Cloud and deploy edge applications on it.
To get an idea of the types of edge applications that you can run on your edge node, you can read our ZEDEDA solution overview.
Setting up your edge node requires the following steps:
- Download EVE-OS.
- Flash EVE-OS onto a portable storage device.
- Install or live-boot EVE-OS on to your edge node.
- Onboarding your edge node to your ZEDEDA Cloud enterprise.
Hardware requirements
- You must have an AMD64 or ARM64 device to install EVE-OS onto.
- If you plan to install EVE-OS on to your edge node, you must have a USB drive.
- If you plan to live-boot EVE-OS on your edge node, you must have an SD card drive.
TIP: if you aren't sure whether you should install EVE-OS your edge node, or live-boot EVE-OS from your edge node, check your device's hardware specifications: if it has a hard drive, you should install EVE-OS.
Software requirements
- If you are using Windows OS, you must install Windows Subsystem for Linux, then install Docker into Linux.
- You must have Docker installed on the machine you will be using to follow this procedure (not the edge node).
ZEDEDA Cloud requirements
- You must have access to a ZEDEDA Cloud enterprise.
- You must have either the SysManager or SysAdmin role in your enterprise.
Set up your edge node
Step 1: get EVE-OS
First, to set up your edge node, you need to get an EVE-OS installer or live image.
Recall that if your edge node has a hard drive, you should get an installer file. Live image files are only necessary if your edge node doesn't have storage capacity.
Step 2: flash your EVE-OS file on to portable storage
Next, you need to flash your EVE-OS installer or live image to a USB drive or SD card, respectively, so you can deliver EVE-OS to your edge node.
Step 3: install EVE-OS
Now, you can install EVE-OS.
After you install EVE-OS on to your edge node, ensure that it remains powered on and connected to Ethernet. It must be able to connect to your ZEDEDA Cloud enterprise as you complete the next step in this procedure, onboarding.
Step 4: onboard your edge node to ZEDEDA Cloud
Lastly, you're ready to onboard your edge node.
You're done! Next...
Now that you have an onboarded edge node, you can use it to run edge applications. To do so, see our guides to managing and deploying edge apps.
